training and Assessment

Treetec provides short course training in the arboricultural industry, we work with a Registered Training Organization (RTO) and provide both training and assessment in a range of competencies. The courses are nationally recognised and can count toward a certificate in Horticulture (Arboriculture)

Our focus is hands on, practical skills and knowledge, most tree training is done in the field, the theory sections may require a classroom. Training is kept flexible and the groups are small to ensure we allow for individual needs.

Training location

We are based in Melbourne and deliver training courses Australia wide.

Operate and Maintain Chainsaws - 6-7 June, 9-10 July

Safe tree climbing and Aerial rescue - commencing 12th June

Equipment

We can provide most equipment as part of the training courses giving students access to a range of new and specialised gear, this includes professional modern chainsaws and the best tree climbing gear.

Training for companies

Our Arborist training courses will enable tree contracting companies to fulfil contractual training requirements for their staff, we can also help with OH&S documentation and systems.

We will come to you and set up flexible options to fit in with ongoing operations.

All training is competency based so we can work with you to ensure down time and costs are kept to a minimum.

For individuals

For individuals, our training provides a perfect starting place to get into the tree industry or progress your career, by undertaking one or two short courses you should fairly simply be able to find employment with a tree company, after that there are more advanced courses enabling people to further thier skills and opportunities.

Arboriculture is a varied field with a range of work types; predominantly tree removal and pruning however there is seed collecting, tree preservation, hardware installation, transplanting, re-vegetation and work within the ecological field. We may be able to assist with guidance and contacts depending on what you want from the tree industry and what you have to offer.

Course costs

This is dependant on the course, location and experience level of participants, see the details within the individual courses and contact us for a quote.

Speciality courses

We can provide customized training along with OHS documentation for specialty tasks such as nest box installation or tree canopy access, this could be for hardware placement such as cameras or christmas lights or fauna and flora research.

Please be aware that training is an important first step, we provide the highest level of training, delivering both knowldge and skills however there is no substitute for on the job experience. Newly acquired skills should be tested and practiced in a controlled and safe manner supervised by fully trained and experienced people.

This said, there are few jobs more varied, interesting or rewarding and the training and experience you gain will serve you enourmously opening up extraordinary opportunities.

Safe tree climbing procedures

Use of harness and ropes to ascend, move around, work within and descend from trees. Our climbing course is suitable for any canopy access activity from tree contracting work to seed collecting to fauna reasearch.

Complex climbing

builds on basic climbing, using advanced techniques and equipment to work in larger more demanding trees

Aerial rescue

How to prepare for and undertake a rescue of an injured climber who has been unable to self rescue. Course covers equipment, preparation, different scenarios - conscious / unconscious, pole top rescue etc.

Aerial rescue refresher course

Usually an annual occurrence; reviews climbers and current competency. Includes any recent advancements in rescue techniques and gives climbers a chance to use some new gear and ensure their climbing / rescue skills are up to speed.

Confined space removal (rigging for tree work)

How to remove a tree: equipment and techniques required to safely dismantle a tree. Appropriate for climbers or EWP operators. It also covers the unit 'Perform above ground pruning' that provides training on how to operate saws and tools aloft.

Because of the course criteria this course is best run in conjunction with Fell Large Trees.

Chain saw course / crosscut

Nationally recognised unit that covers choosing, maintaining, cleaning, fuelling, sharpening and using chainsaws on the ground.

Tree felling - basic

Falling smaller trees or trees that require minimal rigging, reviews chain saw use and OH&S.

Comprehensive look at scarfing / directional falling also some rope use / knots.

Tree felling - complex

Directional felling of large and complex trees, working with large machinery, angles and mechanical advantage, decay within the tree, appropriate rigging / ropes / knots.

Some aspects of confined space removal (tree rigging) are included within this course therefore it is best run in conjunction with Confined Space Removal.

Tree pruning

Comprehensive look at the Australian Standard 4373 2007 - Pruning of Amenity Trees.

Pruning of shrubs and trees, pruning types such as crown lifting, load reduction, hedging and formative pruning etc.

Hazard tree assessment

Often required by councils, this single day, short course gives participants an understanding of Visual Tree Assessment (VTA) - understanding what sections of a tree may fail and why, the telltale signs, precautions / hazard reduction options / management.

Tree industry OH&S

Occupational Health and Safety. Duty of care, tree industry specific issues, paperwork, hazard and risk assessment, legal rights and obligations.

Customised courses

Tailored courses such as possum / nest box installation or basic tree access techniques for fauna studies, whatever tree related training your organisation may require.
